Old Street (Burnaby): Chinese Crepe and Comfort Food

Across from Metrotown is a restaurant called Old Street 老街小吃 and they specialize in comfort Chinese food as well as Chinese crepes. When I came for the private tasting, they had a special promotion going on for Fan Tuan (Chinese Food Delivery service) customers where everything on the menu was 50% off! They’re also on Skip the Dishes and they plan to have a promotion with them soon as well.

Their Shrimp and Pork Wonton in Soup ($8.99) was surprisingly my favourite item of the entire dinner! Their wonton skins were silky soft, the filling was overfilling with juicy pork and shrimp, and the broth was also divine! I would highly recommend getting this if you ever get a chance to come here.

Have you ever tried pig feet?? This is the Pork Hock with Rice ($8.99) and for such an affordable price, I was surprised it came with so much pork feet.

Whenever I see Deep Fried Buns with Condensed Milk ($4.99) on the menu, I just gotta order it. I don’t know what it is, but the crisp exterior and fluffy interior combined with sweet milk just gets me every time!! I wish they fried these buns for 20 seconds longer but overall it was still pretty good!

Their signature Old Street Crepe ($5.95). This one is made of green bean flour, Beef Sausage (+$4), Luncheon Meat (+$3), dried pork flakes (+$2), and Chinese donut. Their crepes start at $5.95 (just comes with egg, and chinese donut). There is a cost to every additional topping.

These crepes are ginormous! I’d recommend adding 1-2 additional items and making this a meal. The SPAM is the most unhealthy meat option but I thought it tasted the best in this crepe. 😛

Their Taiwanese Meat Sauce with Rice ($6.99) was surprisingly super hearty and delicious! I’m going to Taiwan in a month so once I go I will have a better idea of whether this is super authentic or not.

These Marinated Pig Ears ($4.99) were pretty good and makes a nice little appetizer.

For someone who doesn’t love super spicy food, I thought the Szechuan Style Chicken ($8.99) was really delicious! If you want something numbingly spicy, then this might not be for you. However, it certainly caters to the majority and I love them for that!

All in all, I think Old Street offers a great selection of Chinese food items that are just comforting, affordable, and simple. They just opened a month ago so they’re still working on their service (there were some service mishaps when I was there) but I suspect they’ll be much better in the months to come. roksa.ch
