Tokyo Joe’s Ramen Okawari- Not Your Typical Ramen

Tokyo Joe’s Sushi Factory in Richmond has opened a sister restaurant
across the street called Tokyo Joe’s Ramen Okawari. It is in the same area as
Price Smart Foods and Dinesty.

The reviews online were so-so but I wanted to check it out
because I’ve
walked by this restaurant before and I was captivated by their ramen pictures.

We were instantly greeted at the door by their enthusiastic staff and they promptly seated us at a booth.

I thought this page of the menu was quite interesting.
Apparently, they use ginseng, Japanese raisin tree, antler, roasted garlic,
astragalus membranaceus, angelicae gigantis radix, jujube, and ancanthopanacis
cortex in their Okawari Ramen.

I thought their lunch combo set was pretty cool because you
get to try two things for around a dollar more.

I went with the Ramen
Combo 5 ($9.95)
which contains a small okawari ramen and four pieces of
sashimi (two salmon, two tuna). The waitress said the small ramen is about half
the size of a regular one so I was worried that it would not be
enough food. However, the small ramen surprisingly filled me up good.

The ramen toppings were spinach, corn, green onion,
fishcake, bean sprouts, and half an egg. I was really disappointed by the egg
because I expected it to be soft and yolky but it was just hardboiled. Meta
Knight didn’t mind it so much but I didn’t like it at all.

The four pieces of sashimi were really good. The tuna especially,
was way better than my expectations.

Meta Knight ordered the regular Okawari Ramen ($8.25) and chose soy as his base.

His was much larger than mine. Not that I’m complaining. 😛
The ‘herb broth soup’ was very clear and mild. Their soup base is completely
different from the ones you get at Kintaro, Santouka…etc. It is not rich nor
super flavourful nor fatty. It tastes more like herby soy clean broth.

There was actual
ginseng in his soup!

This just shows you the size difference between the regular ramen
and the ‘small’ ramen you get from a combo. Overall, I think the ramen was good, but it IS different and way healthier so it just depends on what you like and your personal preference for ramen.

  • Oooo this place is in Miyaki's old spot. Still ramen and sushi though, maybe it's still run by the same people? Would you recommend this place though?

  • It's hard to say because it depends on whether you like that style of ramen? I personally LOVE the authentic thick, rich, broth so I might not come back often. But I can tell that people who always think ramen is too fatty will like this place because the herby broth is way cleaner and healthier.

I think it definitely deserves at least a try though! So you should check it out! 😀
